💚 Event Spotlights:
The Cambridge Climate Society is delighted to welcome Dr Simon Clark for a workshop on engaging and effective Climate Communication. This will be:
🕕 6-7:30pm
🗓️ Thursday 19th March
📍Bowett Room, Queens’ College
🔗 Register for the event here.
Dr Simon Clark is a British science communicator, author, and YouTuber. After studying Physics at St Peter’s College, Oxford, he earned a PhD in atmospheric physics at the University of Exeter. Simon began making YouTube videos in 2010 while an undergraduate to help disadvantaged students with university admissions, and now focuses on science and climate communication.
His videos have since accumulated over 100 million views and over 700,000 YouTube subscribers. Additionally, he wrote the introductory atmospheric science book Firmament and speaks internationally on science outreach.
Talk Abstract:
The vast majority of people do not act as if we are on a trajectory to ecological catastrophe. In fact the vast majority of people are unaware both of the situation’s severity and the remarkable work being done to course-correct humanity. This is partly due to concerted misinformation campaigns by well-known actors, and partly because getting people to care about the climate crisis and its solutions is very, very, very hard.
In this workshop Simon will reflect on his experience as a full-time climate communicator and attempt to give you a toolkit for creating engaging, science-driven content, focusing on the most important tool of all: storytelling.
This workshop is a part of Cambridge Climate Week, and we hope that you come out of this workshop with the skills to translate climate science into impact beyond Cambridge University.
PLUS! Submit your own content to our Climate Communication Competition, judged by Simon Clark himself!
Whether you’re a postgraduate, undergraduate, or academic faculty in any discipline, take this opportunity to build your science communication skills.
Deadline: 1st April, 23:59
🔗 Submit your entries here by 1st April.
Submissions can be any medium of short-form content (i.e. written, short-form videos, Instagram posts). Your submission must discuss climate science from any discipline.
Why should you submit? 83% of the general public want scientists, from all disciplines, to be clearer, more engaging communicators. Attending our Climate Communication Workshop will teach you the theory, but being a good science communicator requires practice. The overall winner will receive a £25 John Lewis voucher.
